Reestablishing the Watchable Wildlife

Mohawk Dam: Story by Janet Snow

In response to an article in a bird watching magazine we got a phone call from a couple who have become instrumental in helping reestablish the watchable wildlife and nature trail area below our dam. They can and camped with us, we walked the area and planned the work for this season. Vic and Lou Smith drive a couple hours to be here.  Vic planed and built three wood duck nest boxes and secured them to trees in our wetlands.  We hope to have ducks established there next year.  The current plan is for Vic to build two  new benches along the trail that runs through the area.  They also expressed interest in helping plan and build a new bulletin board at the entrance to the nature trail system.  Their help and interest are very much appreciated.

Working through the County Summer Job program I got the media crew to come here and began development of a new self guided nature trail brochure.  Their time was too short for completion but, their work will give the next crew a head start.  They really enjoyed the research they did on the wild life and other aspects of the brochure as well as being outside in the wilderness.
