Volunteer Program Doing Well at Lake Sidney Lanier

Lake Sidney Lanier : Story by Ranger Michael Lapina

The volunteers at Lake Sidney Lanier have been a very busy in 1999. Volunteers have contributed hundreds of hours in various programs. We have completed 2 Eagle Scout projects this year. One of the projects involved the construction of the 3rd and final board walk segment along our main trail system, the Laurel Ridge Trail. A Eagle Scout has also built and installed 20 bat boxes at various parks around the lake. Our Fishing Program has been vary successful as well due to the assistance of hard working volunteers. Volunteers have staffed water safety exhibits in various parks and cities around the lake. they have assisted us in spreading the water safety message to more than 60,000 people. A local 4-H group taught all the 5th grade students in Forsyth County about water safety. Volunteers have also assisted us in boat patrol throughout the summer during the weekends and holidays.  This effort has extended the use of our park rangers in the field. We continue the "Fun In the Sun" water safety program reaching hundreds of children and parents at our public beaches around the lake. The "All Aboard" water safety program has helped educate more than 2000 boaters about current boating laws and rules of the road. Volunteers have also assisted with clean up and maintenance efforts. Both group and individual volunteer efforts have removed over 30 tons of debris from the lake shoreline.

In October 98 we completed the "Volunteer Village Complex".  Seven RV campsites were constructed at the village. These sites offer "traveling" volunteers a place to live while they volunteer their time with us. Volunteers in the village have played an important role in greeting visitors in the Visitor Center on weekends, promoting water safety, improving wildlife habitat, trail maintenance and much much more. The program continues to grow as we find new and more innovative uses for our volunteers. In 1999 the village volunteers contributed 2, 215.5 volunteer hours.
