Our Park’s Tomorrow, Depends on What You Do Today

When was the last time you planted a tree,
              volunteered for someone,
                          or beautified a park?

These questions have all been answered by the people that live within Southwest Florida around the W.P. Franklin Lock and Recreation Areas.  On March 6th 2004, 296 people became park stewards.  These folks gave up one of their Saturday’s to participate in the Take Pride in WP Franklin Event.  This event provided families, church and scout groups, and high school students the opportunity to take pride within their community by making a difference. For the last five years, the South Florida Operations Office (SFOO), Clewiston, FL has hosted this event at the W.P. Franklin Lock Recreation Area.  Every year park enhancement projects are planned and implemented from planting trees to installing picnic tables.

Participants were provided the opportunity to camp within the recreation area the night before, while others preferred to sleep at home and arrive the next day.  No matter where they slept, all our park stewards accomplished huge amounts of work within two and a half hours.  The following projects were led by SFOO Staff and Volunteers:

This event could not have been possible without all of park stewards and vendors. Local vendors donated $11,685.00 within supplies for the Recreation Areas.

After the work was completed, a new lock-viewing platform was opened. This platform provides the public a chance to view vessels that are locking through the W.P. Franklin Lock.

The South Florida Operations Office GREATLY THANKS everyone who made the WP Franklin Event a huge SUCCESS. For more information concerning this event please visit our website at www.saj.usace.army.mil
