Park Host- Volunteer Couple wanted to provide visitor assistance at Holy Ground Battlefield Park, on weekends and holidays from April to September (Labor Day). Responsibilities would include greeting visitors; making routine patrols in the park; checking for minor violations; reporting maintenance problems; explaining the day use fee to boaters and swimmers, securing the park at closing. A Contract Park Attendant position is also available at this park. A campsite with power, water and sewage will be provided. A camper trailer or motor home is required for the position. Park Host - Park Host are needed on a season-to-season basis. Typical summer season runs from the 1st of March to the 1st of October. Winter season runs from the 1st of October to the 1 of March. Park Host positions are available at 5 campgrounds and 3 day-use areas. Host duties vary depending on the season. The main function of a Park Host is to provide services of hospitality to park guests. Campground Host at Old Lock 1 Park – Volunteer Needed 08/31/2011 to 08/31/2012.  Volunteer will serve as the park host for Old Lock 1 Park, which is located near Jackson, AL.  Duties will include securing park after hours, informing Demopolis Site Office of vandalism, theft, misconduct, etc.; coordinating with local law enforcement to resolve problems, overall oversee of the park.  Money handling is not involved; host will only need to keep watch over the park.  Host is requested to stay on-site in the park, but is permitted to leave periodically.  In exchange for their services, park hosts are provided an RV site with full amenities.

Park Host - May 19, 2012 to September 09, 2012. Located 15 miles east of Fairbanks, Alaska. Park Host will have duties with visitor assistance, landscaping, litter pickup, mowing and maintenance of bulletin boards. Duties include assisting visitors by providing park/recreation information and distributing Title 36, park maps, and other informational handouts. The volunteers will assist the Ranger staff with a wide variety of other duties throughout the season. Volunteers are provided a full service campsite, including electric hook-up, water, and sewer in return for providing 24-30 hours a week of volunteer service. (Updated 08/26/2011)

Summer Park Host/Volunteer - Summer Volunteers work period is April 01, 2012 to October 01, 2012.  Multiple volunteers needed for winter recreation season.  Volunteers will work a minimum of 20 hours per week on various assignments in exchange for free camping.  Summer volunteer duties include:  park surveillance, providing information on the Corps to visiting public, trail maintenance, updating bulletin boards, building bird nesting boxes, shoreline and park cleanup, and light maintenance activities.  Volunteers will be provided a campsite with water and electric hookups.  Sewer hookups are not guaranteed.  Volunteers will live on-site and be available to answer questions, provide directions, and other assistance.  Volunteers must provide a safe, licensed, and insured camping unit and vehicle. Volunteer must be bonded to collect fees.  Bonding cost will be paid by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Skills needed:  The ability to perform certain tasks that may involve bending, lifting, or other laborious movement such as construction or trail maintenance, general computer knowledge, a positive and helpful attitude towards visitors, and the aptitude to understand and follow instructions.  (Updated 08/26/2011)

INTERPRETIVE LOCK AND DAM GUIDE'S) - Work Period: April through September (negotiable).

Description of Duties: The volunteer(s) will present lock and dam tours at each of the 6 locks within the Russellville Project Office, stretching from Fort Smith to Little Rock, Arkansas. 

 A minimum of four lock and dam tours will be offered each week.  The volunteer (s) will also conduct campground rounds, delivering flyers to local campers inviting them to attend the local lock and dam tours.

Good communication skills are necessary. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the work site and be at least 18 years old. A valid driver’s license is also necessary in order to drive a government vehicle to the program site.  Mileage may be reimbursable.

 Volunteers will wear provided volunteer uniform while performing volunteer duties. Applicants must be physically capable of performing job duties. Volunteers must have a friendly attitude with the public and portray a positive image of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Training will be provided to conduct lock and dam tours. Work will be performed according to safety guidelines provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. 

Volunteers will be provided a 30 amp campsite with water in conjunction with each area of the Project they are conducting lock and dam tours.  (Updated 08/26/2011)

Tour Guide/Docent - This volunteer is needed year round.  We are looking for individuals to lead tours and present educational programs, which provide general information about the Bay Model and the San Francisco Bay/Delta region for our visitors. Educational programs and tours can also be developed that are geared to specific topics such as agriculture in the Delta, wetland restoration, water diversions, hydraulic engineering, or community involvement and stewardship.  No RV facilities available.

Bookstore Manager - This volunteer is needed year round.  We are looking for someone to manage the Friends of the Bay Model Bookstore.  This would entail reviewing and ordering new books, filling out purchase orders, entering new books into the computer database, taking inventory, and making bank deposits.  Work schedule is very flexible, and can be determined by the volunteer's availability.

Special Skills:  Volunteer should have an interest in books and other gift items, and be comfortable working with numbers.  Volunteer will receive training as to the various tasks involved in running the bookstore.  (Updated 08/26/2011)

Sausalito Art Festival-Visitor Services At The Bay Model - Over Labor Day weekend, be part of the largest festival in the Bay Area when the Bay Model Visitor Center hosts the Sausalito Art Festival!  Volunteer opportunities include staffing the Bay Model bookstore, assisting visitors with questions about the facility and the Art Festival, monitoring activity of the Model and gallery area, and assisting in the children's area.  All volunteers receive free admission to the Festival, and a free Festival t-shirt.  Shifts are from 10 am-1 pm, 1-4 pm, and 3-6 pm on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, September 3-5, 2011.

Orange Blossom Recreation Area – Volunteers are needed for three month terms between the months of September 30, 2011 to October 1, 2012. Volunteers ensure that the park entrance gate opens in the morning and is secured at sunset. They conduct periodic walkthroughs of the park, greet the public and answer questions. Volunteer park hosts do not enforce regulations; however, they are expected to be additional eyes and ears of the park rangers. Park hosts may be needed to assist during emergencies. Hosts are not required to do maintenance or janitorial functions, however litter pickup, when needed, is expected. Hosts days off are either Monday – Tuesday or Tuesday – Wednesday. Orange Blossom Recreation Area is a well known takeout point for river rafters, and authorized for day use only. No overnight camping is available for visitors. Orange Blossom Recreation Area has high visitation during the months of June through August, and   park hosts will be required to operate a no fee entrance booth for a five hour shift on Saturdays and Sundays. The fall and winter seasons see moderate to low visitation. In exchange for volunteer services hosts will be provided with, an RV site, electricity, water, and sewage at no charge. The host is required to maintain a telephone at their own expense. The park address is 17248 Rodden Road, Oakdale, CA, 95361.

McHenry Avenue Recreation Area - Volunteers are needed for three month terms between the months of September 30, 2011 to October 1, 2012 for two separate host sites. Volunteer park hosts ensure that the park entrance gate opens in the morning and is secured at sunset. They conduct periodic walkthroughs of the park, greet the public and answer questions. Park hosts do not enforce regulations; however, they are expected to be additional eyes and ears of the park rangers. Park hosts may be needed to assist during emergencies. Hosts are not required to do maintenance or janitorial functions, however litter pickup, when needed, is expected. Hosts days off are either Monday – Tuesday or Tuesday – Wednesday. During the summer months McHenry Avenue Recreation Area is a popular day use spot with nine boat-in environmental tent camping sites. The recreation season, Memorial Day through Labor Day, can require park hosts to work one five hour shift per weekend in the parks entrance booth. Reservations and fees for camping are collected 14 days in advance by our Field Office Assistant at the Knights Ferry Information Center. (In the last 3 years the campground has not reached full capacity, so the host duties are primarily park host not camp host.) In exchange for volunteer services hosts will be provided with, an RV site, electricity, water, and sewage at no charge. The host is required to maintain a telephone at their own expense. Park hosts may be needed to assist during emergencies. Hosts are not required to do maintenance or janitorial functions, however litter pickup, when needed, is expected. Hosts days off are either Monday – Tuesday or Tuesday – Wednesday. The Knights Ferry Recreation Area is a popular put-in spot for river rafters, and authorized for day use only. No overnight camping is available for visitors. The community of Knights Ferry is rich in history, and the host site is in view of the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi River. The bridge is open to foot traffic only. In exchange for volunteer services hosts will be provided with, an RV site, electricity, water, and sewage at no charge. The host is required to maintain a telephone at their own expense. The park address is 17968 Covered Bridge Road, Oakdale, CA, 95361.

Docent, Knights Ferry Recreation Area – The Knights Ferry Recreation Area is the centerpiece of the Stanislaus River Parks system. It is the most popular of the 9 developed recreation areas. Rich in history, the Knights Ferry area is on the National Historic Registry. Docents assist park rangers giving interpretive programs about the Grist (flour) Mill, Mill Office, and the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi River, the Knights Ferry Covered Bridge. Knights Ferry’s history tells tales of the 49er era, Native American history, natural history, and pivotal assistance in the development of Stanislaus County. As the docents experience and knowledge increase they may be asked to give interpretive programs on their own. Other interpretive topics include the Life Cycle of the Chinook Salmon, Water Safety, Cleanup / Maintenance / Trail Maintenance, and Cultural / Natural History. (Updated 08/26/2011)

Eastman Lake is a trophy bass lake, popular for fishing, horseback riding and a quiet get away, but close to the metropolitan areas.  Yosemite National Park is 2 hours east of here, and Fresno is 1 hour south/west. The same visitors come back year after year. Eastman Lake provides tent camping, RV camping (electric or full hook up sites), group camping, and equestrian camping. All permanent park volunteers are provided with an electrical RV site (full hook ups are provided), laundry facilities, and reimbursement of fuel, including gasoline, diesel and propane. Cellular service is not reliable on project.  Motor Homes and 5th wheels of any size will fit into one of our volunteer spots.

General Volunteer Position Needed For Grounds Keeping - Each volunteer is required to work 20 hours per week. Volunteer duties include park clean up, campsite cleaning, and serving the public as needed. Volunteer schedules are flexible, with morning and evening work available. Volunteers are not required to clean restrooms or collect fees. Applications are accepted year round. Please submit an application to be considered for a position.

Park Host, Horsecreek Campground - Provide hospitality and customer service to campground guests, assisting in the cleaning/upkeep of campground facilities and promoting safe responsible use of Corps of Engineer amenities. Campground hosts are expected to ensure park entrance gates open in the morning and secure gates at night. Conduct periodic walkthroughs of park, greeting public and answering questions. Bonding of the Campground Host may be required in order for them to perform fee collection within the campground and remit camping fees to Nation Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS) via computer. Some computer and cash register experience may be needed in order to perform NRRS operations. Campground hosts do not enforce park regulations; however, they are expected to be the eyes and ears of the park rangers and are expected to assist rangers and visitors during emergencies. During the winter months, weekday visitation is low with moderate use during the weekend.  Work min 20 hours/week and live in natural outdoor setting, with your own RV.

•           Appearance should be neat and a positive reflection of the organization.

•           Ability to remain calm in busy situation.

Administrative Support Volunteer - Primary Responsibilities: The primary duty of the Office/Administration Volunteer is to assist the Rangers in the Lake Kaweah Headquarters office.

Specific duties include:

 

•           Assisting with document preparation and filing; this may include brochures, program plans, spreadsheets, and the like.

•           Assisting with counting receipts from the “iron rangers” located in the Security Room.

•           Assisting the Interpretive Ranger with presentations, as available.

•           Assisting with other duties as available and scheduled.

Volunteers selected for this position may be assigned a campsite with water, electric, and sewer hookups in Horsecreek Campground.

 Special Skills:

 Minimum Qualifications

•           The volunteer must be eligible to be bonded; the Corps of Engineers will bond the Volunteer with a $5,000 fidelity bond to protect the government from loss of funds.

•           Desire to work (min 20 hours/week) and live in natural outdoor setting, with your own RV

•           Desire to meet and interact with persons from varied backgrounds.

•           Cognitive, verbal and auditory ability to correspond on behalf of USACE volunteer program and file documents in accordance with current standards, answer questions and communicate with various constituents who call, email or stop into the Project Office.

Site Host – Slick Rock Recreation Area – Volunteer Duties:

Upkeep and repair of park facilities such as: restrooms, trails and natural areas. This requires cleaning and inspection of facilities for repair needs, repairing facilities, mowing, weed eating, and other environmental conservation techniques. Work min 20 hrs/wk and live in natural outdoor setting with your own RV.  Foster teamwork by participating in group workdays and other special events and activities.  At times, may assist with day-use monitoring of visitors.

Special Skills:

Minimum Qualifications

•           Cognitive and verbal ability to communicate with other park personnel.

•           Physical ability to operate mowing and maintenance machinery lifting and carrying 30 lbs for 100 feet (position may require extended periods in the outdoors during adverse conditions such as heat, cold or rain).

•           Visually able to spot safety hazards and take prompt appropriate action to correct in accordance with training provided.

Desired Experience

•           Landscaping, planting and care of flowers or other small plants.

Resource Management/Patrol - Projects/duties include: Assisting rangers in daily patrol by answering questions, providing crew assistance on boat patrol, installing or maintaining signs and bulletin boards, and stocking brochure boxes. Other duties may include performing trail patrol and maintenance, assisting in boundary inspections, checking for hazards to visitor safety and reporting such hazards to rangers. Participation in a variety of wildlife and resource management duties such as: creel census, bird observations, endangered species management, wood duck nest box monitoring and maintenance, vegetation plantings, erosion control measures, fence construction, campground maintenance, and other special projects.

About Lake Sonoma:  Nestled in the beautiful coastal foothills of Sonoma County, California, Lake Sonoma is surrounded by world famous vineyards and land that is rich in history. Created by the construction of Warm Springs Dam in 1983, the lake provides for flood control, irrigation and recreation.  The park has more than 17,000 acres to explore, including more than 47 miles of trails and when the lake is full over 50 miles of shoreline. Recreational opportunities include: hiking, biking, equestrian, boating, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, swimming, fishing and hunting to name a few.

Visitor Center Assistant Needed:  Works at U.S. Army Corps of Engineer, Lake Sonoma Recreation Area in Geyserville, Ca.  Volunteer is assigned to the Milt Brandt Visitor Center and the Don Clausen Fish Hatchery to perform the following work: Answer visitor's questions, explain park rules, regulations and provide any needed assistance. Presents short interpretive talks to campers, groups of visitors and school groups as needed. Roves and provides information in the Don Clausen Fish Hatchery.  You will operate cash register to make sales for the Friends of Lake Sonoma gift shop and other assigned duties.

REQUIREMENTS:  The volunteer must be able to absorb a great deal of natural and cultural history information and use that information when speaking to the public. All volunteers must be able to work with the visiting public and maintain a positive attitude. The volunteer will be provided on the job training and any required safety training necessary to help them carry out their duties. All volunteers are given an orientation to the park and provided with volunteer uniform components. Volunteers must wear a uniform when on duty and safety equipment as required by their duties. Use of the RV campsites will require a three month minimum commitment and at least three, eight hour days per volunteer, per week and please provide references from previous volunteer or work experience on the application.

COMPENSATION:  The Park has six RV campsites available – Year Round -with hook ups (water, electric [up to 30 amps] and septic). The RV pads are located in the Liberty Glen Campground a short drive from the visitor center. The RV site does have a phone line that the volunteer can use to set up local phone service. Pets are allowed but must be under control, on a 6’ leash at all times and be non-intrusive to others and wildlife. A 15% discount is granted in the Friends of Lake Sonoma book store.  No monetary compensation is available for these volunteer positions. (Updated 08/26/2011)

Camp Host Volunteer for the winter months,  Approximately 01 October 2011 to 01 May 2012. 

Requirements / Responsibilities

 

•           Must be bondable (good credit, assets, etc.).  The Corps will pay for the bond.

•           Open gates in the morning and close gates at night.

•           Patrol for vandalism, maintenance issues, and fee compliance and allowed to inform campers of the rules, but no authority to enforce the rules.  Report compliance issues to a ranger but should not be out specifically patrolling for rule breakers.  

•           Should conduct all patrols BEFORE dark.

•           Relay camper complaints to ranger staff.

•           Pick up light trash and report major trash. 

•           Answer visitor questions regarding recreation opportunities at Lake Mendocino.

•           Collect fees from iron rangers and ability to lift 50(?) pounds.

•           Count money, keep accurate records, and maintain security of funds during operations.

•           Remit fees using ORMS (Online Recreation Management Software) through the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS), prior experience EXTREMELY desirable.  

•           There are no reservations during the winter. 

•           Must be mobile, may have to move from Chekaka to Kyen to Bushay and then back to Kyen.

We seek experienced cheerful and outgoing camp hosts to volunteer at Lake Mendocino this winter.  Candidates are primarily responsible for the management of a small campground, approximately 30 campsites. Other responsibilities include answering visitor questions, opening and closing gates, routine patrols of the campground, litter control, and communication with ranger staff.  Lake Mendocino is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Candidates must be bondable and must own or have available to them a recreational vehicle for occupancy during the winter.  Power, water, and sewer are provided at no cost.  (Updated 08/26/2011)

Volunteers Needed for the 2011-12 Fall/Winter Recreation Season for the period of 08 September 2011–15 March 2012:  Two (2) couples, 21 years or older with a factory built, self contained camper trailer or motor home at least 28 feet long.   No other persons can live with the volunteer couples during the volunteer period. Two pet limit per coupleVicious Pets are not permitted (ie, Dobermans, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers).  Volunteer Park Host couples will be working a rotating four day on/four day off schedule. When Volunteer Park Hosts are on duty, they will be responsible for opening and closing park gate; park patrol; park surveillance; maintaining shelter reservation calendar; issuing horseshoes and volleyballs to shelter users during the volunteer period.  Volunteer Park Host will not be reserving shelters or collecting shelter fees.  On duty days from 08 September thru 23 October, Volunteer Park Host will open gate at 8 a.m. and close gate at 8 p.m.  On duty days from 24 October 2011 thru 29 February 2012, Volunteer Park Host will open gate at 8 a.m. and close gate at 6 p.m. Volunteer Park Hosts will be required to post daily generation schedule; patrol park every three (3) hours to check for minor violations (pets off leash, parking on grass); and report vandalism or maintenance problems to Operations Project Management Office.  During the period 08 September thru 23 October, if scheduled to work on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays, Volunteer Park Host will man air-conditioned/heated gatehouse from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for traffic control and oversee shelter reservation.  Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area has 106 parking spaces, two group shelters, twelve individual picnic tables; playground; horseshoe pits and volleyball play areas; and a nature trail. Total round trip tour of the park is approximately .08 miles.

A campsite is provided for each couple with 50 amp electricity, water, sewage, and a restricted-use telephone line; however, Park Host Volunteer must supply a physical telephone in their camping unit for communication with Allatoona Operations Project Management Office. Cooper’s Furnace Day Use Area is very flat and easy to walk or bike.  An average of 22 hours or less of volunteer work per couple per week is required.  Please contact  Virginia E. Stamp Creek Ramp - Volunteer Host Couple Needed 15 September 2011- 15 March 2012.  Stamp Creek Ramp is located approximately nine miles from downtown Cartersville, GA (A Super Wal-Mart is six miles from the area) Stamp Creek Boat Ramp is a flat area that can be walked or a bicycle may be used. The area has a ramp with 41 boat launching spaces. Total round trip tour of ramp is .2 mile.

One couple, 21 years year or older, with a factory built, self-contained, camper trailer, or motor home at least 28 feet long is needed during the period 15 September 2011-15 March 2012.  No other persons can live with the volunteer couples during the volunteer period. A campsite (located in the ramp area) is provided with 50 amp electricity, water, sewage, and a telephone line for making local calls.  Volunteer Park Hosts will work a 5 day on/2 day off schedule (Thursday thru Monday) with some flexibility on Thursdays and Mondays.  Park Hosts will be responsible for, park surveillance, user fee compliance, and park patrols.  Boat ramp gates are open seven days a week.  Volunteer Park Host will patrol boat ramp every three (3) hours (between 9 a.m. and sunset) checking for fee compliance and issuing user fee envelopes (volunteers will not collect user fees), check for minor violations, such as pets off leash and parking on grass, report vandalism and maintenance problems to Project Management Office.   An average of 20 hours of volunteer work per week is required.  Please contact Virginia E. Available Hartwell Lake Volunteer Positions – 2012

Campground Volunteers April 01/2012 to November 30/2012.

The primary duty of the Campground volunteer is to maintain cleanliness at camp sites as outlined below.  Volunteers will be responsible for cleaning campsites as visitors check out of the campground.  Duties include cleaning out debris in fire rings, picking up litter left on site, spraying for insects, and transporting and disposing of trash in campground dumpsters.  Facilities should meet the standard of clean daily. 

Volunteers will also assist with the Water Safety and Life Jacket Loaner Programs as needed.  Duties include making contact with campground visitors, handing out water safety items and loaner life jackets.  Volunteers will average 25 hours of service per week, though mid-week work will be minimal. 

The host must provide their own reliable, licensed vehicle, fuel, and insurance to transport materials including trash.  Volunteers must maintain a valid driver’s license.  Volunteers may use a golf cart or similar vehicle while performing assigned duties.  Prior approval is required.  No vehicles/transportation will be provided by the government.

A campsite will be provided to volunteers with water and electric hook-ups.  Sewer dump stations are available in each campground.  All cleaning equipment, supplies, and uniform items will be provided by the government.

Available Hartwell Lake Volunteer Position – 2012

Campground Attendant at Milltown Campground - May 1, 2012 through Sept 3, 2012 (weekends only).

Location:  Milltown campground is a group campground located in Hart County, GA, and only minutes away from Hartwell, GA.  The campground has the following amenities: 4 group camp loops, shelters, shower/restroom facilities, water spigots, boat ramp, courtesy dock, playground, and dump station.  The campground will be open from 7:00 am Friday through 2:00 pm Sunday.

Description:  Duty hours will consist of approximately 30 hours per week.  During weekends, the volunteer open the main gate at 7:00 am and close the gate at 10:00 pm.  The volunteer will staff the gatehouse daily from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in order to handle all business transactions.  The Incumbent will be required to operate ORMS software, make reservations, check in campers, collect fees, and issue various passes, among other duties.  Tact, diplomacy and courtesy shall be exercised whenever dealing with the public.  The volunteer will perform three daily inspections of the campground, and observe campers to insure compliance with Title 36 Rules and Regulations.  The volunteer will also perform minor maintenance within the assigned area.  The duties will include litter/trash pickup, trash collection, raking, sweeping, clearing silt from ramp, fire extinction, cleaning fire ring, cleaning restrooms, stopped toilets, tripped breakers, etc.  Any maintenance items that cannot be corrected easily should be reported to the Corps office for corrective action.  All work will be conducted in a safe manner in compliance with Corps of Engineers safety regulations.

Qualifications:  The selected Volunteer may be an individual or couple, though a couple is highly recommended.  The Volunteer must be bondable.  U.S.A.C.E. will pay costs associated with bonding of the selected person(s).  Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages, have good communication skills, be willing to commit to a long term agreement, and be able to maintain a set schedule. The incumbent must be mentally and physically able to meet the specifications in the job description.  The volunteer must be able to demonstrate the basic skills necessary to operate a windows based, mouse driven computer program.  There will be no training on basic computer operation.  The incumbent is required to have a presentable, self-contained camping trailer to reside in, and provide valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.  A separate vehicle or golf cart is highly recommended for transportation within the park.  Park attendants will be required to provide all parts of the uniform except for the nametag and red vest, which will be provided by the government.

The self-depository boxes will then be transported to the project office to be counted with a Corps of Engineers employee. A free full-service campsite is provided at the North Overlook Campground (site 19) during the volunteer’s work period. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. The volunteer will work five days a week with two days off in the middle of the week. Good communication skills are necessary. FIFIELD RECREATION AREA VOLUNTEER

Work Period: April – Mid October

Job Description: Fifield Recreation Area is a scenic picnic area with four shelters, two restrooms, a playground, and a Volksweg Trail trailhead. The duties of the volunteer in this area include cleaning the restrooms and shelters, removing trash, picking up litter, opening the park entrance gate and restroom buildings by 8:00 a.m., and mowing and trimming the grass. A John Deere tractor mounted mower and string trimmer with fuel and supplies will be provided by the Corps of Engineers. The Fifield Volunteer will also be responsible for cleaning the restroom at the Marina Cove, and emptying the trash receptacles. A John Deere Gator 4-wheel vehicle will be supplied for transportation from Fifield to the Marina. All of the cleaning supplies will be provided. A free full-service site is provided in the Fifield Recreation Area and the area is gated from 11:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. The volunteer will work five days a week with two days off in the middle of the week. Good communication skills are necessary. WHITEBREAST LIGHT MAINTENANCE VOLUNTEER

Job Description: Whitebreast Campground is a large scenic campground with a boat ramp, five shower buildings, four picnic shelters, six vault toilets, a youth camping area and one fish cleaning station. The duties of the volunteer in this area include cleaning out fire rings within the Whitebreast Campground and Youth Camp using a John Deere Gator 4 or 6-wheeler, performing custodial duties at the Whitebreast Youth Camp, performing custodial duties at the Whitebreast Campground area on Tuesdays and performing light maintenance duties at all Corps Recreation Areas as assigned. Custodial duties for the campground will include cleaning the five shower buildings, six vault toilets and the fish cleaning station. The volunteer will not be responsible for removing garbage from the garbage cans at the campsites. Mileage will be reimbursed for travel to other recreation areas to perform light maintenance duties (staining picnic tables, painting water fountains, etc.). TRAIL MAINTENANCE VOLUNTEER

Volunteer Work Period: April through October

Job Description: Lake Red Rock has a 10 mile asphalt trail, Volksweg Trail, which winds its way from below the Red Rock Dam, along the north side of Lake Red Rock and ends at the Fifield Recreation Area. Trail maintenance will consist of but not be limited to picking up trash on or along the trail, clearing all rocks, pebbles, acorns, sticks, etc. from the paved trail surface. Volunteer will utilize a John Deere Gator and leaf blower (provided by the Corps of Engineers) to accomplish the majority of work; however, the volunteer will also need to sweep away debris by hand when the mechanized equipment is unable to remove it. In addition, the volunteer will also be responsible for cleaning fire rings in the recreation areas along the trail route (Howell Station, North Overlook, Wallashuck and Ivan’s Campgrounds). A free full-service campsite in Howell Station Campground (site 58) will be provided during the volunteer work period. Volunteers must be able to work the entire work period. Job Description: Volunteer will be responsible for maintenance of bluebird nesting boxes located throughout the lake area, and two purple martin houses located in the North Tailwater and South Tailwater Recreation Areas. Volunteer will prepare structures for nesting of target species, document findings on nesting success and make repairs or replace structures as needed.  A free, full-service campsite in Howell Station Campground will be provided during the work period. Mehaffey Boat Ramp Host- Volunteer Work Period: May 17, 2012 to September 1, 2012.
VOLUNTEER COUPLE wanted to provide visitor assistance at Mehaffey Boat Ramp on Saturdays, Sundays & holidays from May 17th through Labor Day weekend, September 4th. Responsibilities include:

greeting boaters and visitors as they enter the area

providing self-registration envelopes to boat ramp users

giving directions on where to park

explaining the day use fee when necessary

Mehaffey boat ramp is a four lane ramp and very busy on weekends. There are approximately 140 parking spaces on the ramp side of the road. Overflow parking is available across Mehaffey Bridge Road. The work is physically demanding in that volunteer's) will be on his/her feet for extended periods of time assisting users and visitors. Volunteers should be capable of doing a great deal of walking on a large blacktop parking area that is exposed to the sun. INTERPRETIVE GUIDE

Work Period: May 1 through 30 October.

Description of Duties: This volunteer will present a variety of programs which will range from Visitor Center and Dam tours to guided walks in the Devonian Fossil Gorge or any of a wide range of programs such as water safety presentations at the beach, nature walks, nature craft programs, and outdoor skills of any kind. Water safety is our main interest and will make up the majority of the programming. This is a chance to use your creativity and have fun outside.

Good communication skills are necessary. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the Coralville Lake office and Visitor Center and be at least 18 years old. A valid driver’s license is also necessary in order to drive a government vehicle to the program site. Although water safety is a major proponent of our programming, the volunteer does NOT need to be any kind of certified life guard or such. There will be no actual water rescue skills required.

Custodial Volunteer, Rolling Cove Park - May 21st through Labor Day Weekend

Job Description:  Rolling Cove is a lightly used 32 site free campground located on the south shore of Rathbun Lake. There is one small shower building and two vault toilets located in the park. Duties will include: Campground surveillance, daily cleaning of shower building, vault toilets, and fish cleaning table. Fire rings will be cleaned occasionally. All cleaning supplies will be provided by the government.  Seasonal tree pruning, painting and other light maintenance may also be performed. A 4 wheel motorized “Mule” type UTV may be provided if needed. Work will performed five days per week with two days off during the week. Work will be in exchange for a full hook up, paved camp site with a storage shed. Applicants must be physically capable of performing job duties. Volunteer Park Attendants for Dent Acres Campground:
Enjoy the spring or fall in beautiful northern Idaho. Dent Acres is a full service campground with 50 campsites, a boat launch ramp, playground and restroom with showers. The lake offers nearly 54 miles of fishing and boating opportunities. Spring opening: Two couples needed from April 1 to May 21, 2012. Fall opening: Two couples needed for September 4 to November 25, 2012. Work is a minimum 30 hours per week, with most duties between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, with no significant physical and mental condition that would prevent the volunteer from carrying out these duties. Volunteers live on-site and answer visitor questions, provide directions and other assistance, explain fee payment procedures and educate visitors about campground rules.   Will assist park staff with minor projects such as painting, pruning brush and or trees. Volunteers do not perform skilled maintenance duties or perform janitorial services. Full service campsite provided for no charge (water, sewer, electric service with 50 amp maximum. Volunteers provide their own RV or trailer (sites can accommodate 35 foot trailer). Thurs-Sunday provides meet-and-greet services to visitors, minor grounds keeping, and maintains reservation postings for 15 campsites at a very popular recreation area.  This remote no cell phone area requires satellite TV and internet if desired at volunteer's expense.  Basic phone service and two way radios are provided.  Limited long distance travel and meal reimbursements provided w approval.  Mack’s Creek is a lovely bustling little park that has been transforming positively with continuous improvements. The Host Site is slightly separated from the park and includes a newer steel shade shelter and concrete pad, sewage hook up, 50 amp pedestals, and a securable storage shed. Park staff transfers potable water by portable tank.

Mowing Volunteer/Cleaning Volunteer- This position requires the maintenance and operation of a commercial riding mower and a gasoline powered line trimmer. This equipment will be used to mow and trim approximately 19 acres in the Opossum Creek Recreation Area or approximately 17 acres in the Lone Point recreation Area.  Cleaning Volunteer- This position could require the cleaning of comfort stations, shower houses, picnic shelters, and litter pickup depending on the campground facilities. This work can be divided into two tours: one for the weekend (Saturday – Sunday) and the other is for weekdays (Monday – Friday). The purpose of this schedule is to divide the workload so that no one has to work more than approximately 20 hours per week.


There may be the opportunity for two volunteer couples to share the cleaning and mowing work. A campsite will be provided to volunteers that include water, sewer and a 50 amp electrical hook up. Visitor Center Operation - April 1, 2012 to September 30, 2012 times maybe adjustable. 24 hour per week per couple. Operate Visitor Center on weekends, light maintenance work such as watering, weeding, painting, filing, bulletin board updates, pruning, cleaning, and other light task. Prospective volunteers will receive an information packet with a map of the local area, the lake, and photos of the RV campsite.  Volunteer will receive RV Campsite with full hookup, 50 Amp service, water and sewer. The campsite is isolated on a secure road. Volunteers are located alone within walking distance of the Visitor Center. There is a great fishing lake, just 30 minutes from Kansas City. Camp Host - The Camp Host will have duties in visitor assistance and facility maintenance.
Campground surveillance will be primarily on the weekends (Friday night, Saturday day/night, Sunday day). A register of camper occupancies dates and tag numbers will be recorded by the Camp Host(s) and given to the Rangers on a weekly basis. Camp Host(s) duties will also include maintaining fee envelope boxes with proper material, answering the public's questions, and handing out informative material such as maps when requested by the public.  The Camp Host(s) will be responsible for the mowing and weed eating around trees in French Creek Cove campground. Some other light maintenance duties may be assigned, such as painting, fixing site markers, watering flowerbeds and litter pick-up. All required supplies and tools will be provided by the Lake Office to complete the assigned jobs. The Camp Host(s) is required to provide 20 hours per week service in exchange for a free campsite with full hookups. Positions are for a 6 week rotation but are negotiable. Volunteer Coordinator / Honor Camp Work Crew Supervisor - March 1, 2012 to November 30, 2012. The volunteers will also perform courtesy vessel inspections at boat ramps and assist the Ranger staff with on the water vessel inspections. Park Camp Host March 30, 2012 to November 3, 2012. This position is located at Pearson-Skubitz Big Hill Lake, Kansas in the Timber Hill Campground. This campground includes 20 campsites and is located on the East-Central area of the lake. Big Hill Lake is located within Labette County in Southeast Kansas. The land consists of rolling hills covered in cedars, oaks and other hardwoods. Predominate wildlife species include the Eastern Wild Turkey, Whitetail Deer, Bobcat, Coyote and other small mammals such as Raccoon, Opossum and Armadillo. These species can easily be viewed by the watchful eye. Fishing on Big Hill Lake is top of the class. Big Hill is host to many tournaments throughout the spring and summer months. The volunteer will be provided a full service (50 amp, sewer, water, local phone access & internet) site near the entrance to the campground and boat launching facility. A mail box is also available for mail pick-up at the site. Other amenities include a small storage shed and an area for a garden. As an important part of Big Hill’s visitor assistance program the volunteer will welcome visitors and provide information regarding fees, rules, regulations, and other general park information.  The volunteer will monitor park activities and contact a park ranger if problems are observed. Other duties will include basic maintenance tasks, roadside litter pickup, sign maintenance, cleaning of fire rings, and fee compliance checks within campground area. Volunteer Park Caretakers-Fishtrap Lake is looking for two separate volunteer park caretakers. They would be stationed at the Damsite Recreation Area and their jobs would consist of mowing non-typical areas with a riding lawn mower and a weed eater, and policing the area and cleaning restrooms during non-contractor performance days. They must be capable of performing physical work duties in an outdoors environment. Volunteers will also serve in a surveillance capacity and as a point of contact between Park Rangers and the many visitors who frequent the area. All necessary equipment, fuel, safety equipment as well as all necessary cleaning supplies will be provided. In return, the volunteers will receive a free campsite which is located in a beautiful landscaped area designed only for the park caretakers which includes; electrical, water, sewer and garbage pick-up. They must be capable of performing physical work duties in an outdoors environment. Volunteers will also serve in a surveillance capacity and as a point of contact between Park Rangers and the many visitors who frequent the area. Volunteer Park Host - Location: Rough River Lake, Cave Creek Campground, Grayson County, Kentucky.  Rough River Lake is situated in Breckinridge, Hardin, and Grayson Counties in central Kentucky.  The lake is approximately 1 ½ hours from Louisville, ¾ hour from Elizabethtown, one hour from Bowling Green, and one hour from Owensboro.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns 9,337 acres at Rough River Lake, which includes a 5100 acre lake at summer pool.  There are numerous boat ramps, campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails, and other facilities.  The Rough River Dam State Resort Park, which manages a lodge, campground, marina, golf course, airport, and various other facilities, is a popular destination for tourists.

Description: The Volunteer Park Host will work at Cave Creek Campground.  The volunteer is responsible for staffing the campground tollhouse, marking/posting incoming reservations, collection of fees, checking campers in and out using the N.R.R.S. system, data entry, answering the phone, greeting guests, answering questions, conducting interpretive programs, general maintenance, gardening, visitor center operation, and other duties as assigned.  Volunteer will report weekly or more often if necessary to the designated Government Point of Contact.  Work hours and days will vary, and will consist of 30 hours per week.

Qualifications: Selected Volunteer may be an individual or couple.  Volunteer must be bondable.  U.S.A.C.E. will pay costs associated with bonding of the selected person(s).  Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages, have good communication skills, be willing to commit to a long term agreement, be able to maintain a set schedule, and have basic computer skills.  An interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is recommended.  Volunteer must be at least 18 years of age, wear the required uniform, and provide their own camper.

Wappapello Lake Mgr. Office Position 2011 - 2012 – Visitor Center Attendant – Season:  May-October, negotiable dates, 2 month minimum commitment required. 

The primary duty of the Visitor Center Attendant (VCA) is to answer visitor’s questions and provide any needed assistance.  Maintain appropriate records of visitation as well as report equipment breakdowns or other unusual occurrences.   Operate audio visual equipment i.e. videos to the public.   Clean the VC daily and water the outdoor flowers.  The volunteer shall provide an average of 20 hours of volunteer service per week and may serve for the entire recreation season or a portion of the recreation season. Additional volunteer activities may be necessary to meet hour’s requirements, but can be arranged.  Volunteers selected for this position are assigned a campsite with water, electric, and sewer hookups in either the Redman Creek East or Redman Creek West Campgrounds or Peoples Creek Upper Campground.  All cleaning supplies will be provided by the Government.

Specific duties include: Staff 3,200 square foot VC 3 times per week, with a preferred but negotiable schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Duties will include: Opening and closing facility, turning on audio visual equipment, replenishing brochure racks, and routine cleaning the interior of building.   Tile, carpet and ceramic tile flooring shall be cleaned and mopped.   Restrooms shall be cleaned.  New trash bags shall be placed in each of the trash containers.  Trash shall then be deposited in the outside dumpster.  An adequate supply of toilet paper, paper towels, and hand soap shall be replenished. Light fixtures shall be cleaned, as they become dirty.  All stainless fixtures shall be shined and all hard water stains removed.  All furniture, fixtures, and displays including but not limited to chairs, telephones, tables, fax machine, computer, window sills, window blinds, mounted animals, life jacket loaner bind, recycle containers and bulletin board shall be cleaned. Maintain cleanliness of glass doors and walkways. Operate “Life Jacket Loaner Program”.  Disperse and retrieve life jackets from return bind. Volunteer is responsible for all transportation and transportation costs associated with the position.  This includes having access to a reliable licensed vehicle, fuel, valid vehicle insurance, and a valid driver’s license.  Assist with other duties as available and scheduled.

Number of Positions:  Up to three volunteer internships available, dates flexible May – Aug 2012

Location: John H Kerr Reservoir, Boydton VA.  Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000 acre lake located on the Roanoke River on the border of Virginia and North Carolina.  Park Rangers for the Army Corps of Engineers operate numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and boat ramp facilities.  The Corps also operates the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, a popular field trip destination for school, youth, and church groups. The center is also opened throughout the summer for use by the general public.

Description: Work within the Tanner Environmental Education Center under the supervision of a Park Ranger.  Greet guests, answer questions about local flora and fauna, conduct and assist with environmental interpretive programs.  Programs include school field trips, classroom presentations, weekend events, and campground interpretive programs.  All programs will highlight local ecosystems, wildlife, natural / cultural history, and natural resource issues. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. Work hours and days will vary; hours per week = 40, with a commitment of at least 300 hours over eight weeks.

Qualifications: Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages.  A background or interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is required.  Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a degree in a natural resources, education, or recreation field.  Must be at least 18 years of age, posses a valid driver’s license, be a US citizen or Permanent Resident. *IF SELECTED, background check and finger printing are required.*

This Host position is for Wolf Creek Campground, which is located on the quiet shores of Lake Sakakawea. Wolf Creek is a primitive campground with 101 sites; however, the Campground Host is provided a site with full hook ups. Hosts should be outgoing, friendly, and enjoy working with people. We rely on our hosts to help us with visitor assistance, maintaining rules, and garbage pickup. Both 2.5 and 5 month positions are available.

Campground Host/Downstream Campground:  We are looking to fill a volunteer Campground Host position for May 1, 2012 to September 2012. This host position is for Downstream Campground, which is a Class A campground and is located in a cottonwood forest along the beautiful Missouri River. Downstream Campground has 101 modern campsites and 17 primitive campsites.  Hosts are provided a site with full hook-ups. Campground Host-
Volunteer Campground Hosts position available, May 1, 2012 to September 30, 2012, at Corps of Engineer’s, Beaver Creek Campground on Lake Oahe, 16 miles West of Linton, North Dakota. Hosts are requested to stay a minimum of two weeks.  Duties include visitor assistance such as supplying information and sport equipment to campers and day users, answering camper’s questions, calling 911 or the Emmons County Sheriff’s Office as needed. Safety hazards or issues need to be addressed immediately and reported to the Park Manager or Park Ranger. Daily lists of occupied sites with vehicle license plate numbers are recorded.  Monitor the campgrounds water system checking for leaks, reading pressure gauges and checking the chlorinator system. Volunteers will do a light cleaning of the comfort station on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of each week if needed or call the Park Manager if an additional contract cleaning is needed. Volunteers will not be paid for any services, mileage, incidentals, etc.  The volunteer hosts will stay on a full hookup site which includes a paved site partially shaded with trees, 30/50 amp electric service, water, sewage and close access to a public phone and possibly a phone line to the campsite.  Due to shifting earth and drought, water system failure is not uncommon.  Troubleshooting and repairs will be made as soon as the manpower or funds are available and the system is determined to be economically feasible to repair.  (Updated 08/26/2011)

Boundary Blitzers -
Strong nature lover's needed in October, November and December (weather permitting) to help mark and clear the park's boundary, weather permitting. Suitable for adults and possibly senior high students. Enjoy the outdoors in some of the more remote areas of the park. Even if you can't make these dates, call to help on other days.
Special Skills Needed:
Must be in good physical condition, be able to carry heavy equipment and walk long distances over uneven terrain.

Nest Box Monitor - Volunteers needed April  through August  to monitor Bluebird nest boxes and record nesting progress on data sheets on a weekly basis. Routes normally take approximately one hour to walk each week. Training for this position typically takes place in March. Other nesting or roosting boxes that are monitored and maintained on a yearly basis include squirrel den, wood duck and bat boxes.

Butterfly Monitor
- Volunteers needed April  through October  to identify and record butterfly species on a weekly basis. Routes normally take one to two hours to walk each week, depending on which route is chosen. However, volunteers can also serve as substitutes or volunteer on a bi-weekly or monthly basis to give primary monitors a break. Couples and a home school family have volunteered in the past. This position would also be good for a team of high school students desiring a project in natural sciences that also provides data for the park.
