Volunteers Play Cool Hand Luke and Water Safety Bingo

On July 30, 2005 the Milford Lake Corps staff was involved with the Junction City, KS National Night Out Against Crime. Booths were set up in a city park by various law enforcement agencies, the County Health Dept., and several others to focus on getting to know your neighbors, meeting law enforcement folks, various safety issues, etc. We set up a water safety booth. Here are some Corps of Engineers volunteers “helping out” with water safety.

Ray Ochs, volunteer from 2003 and 2005, plays Cool Hand Luke with a young man. Ice water (about 50 degrees) is placed in a cooler with 100 pennies. The participant has one minute to pick up as many pennies as they can, one at a time, using the same hand. The purpose of the game is to show the effects of cold water and hypothermia. It’s a fun game on a hot day with a valuable message.

Another Corps volunteer, Connie Bowen, plays a game of water safety bingo. Each player marks off the appropriate picture, which imparts a water safety message. The “bingo” winner wins a lifesaver of course……what else would you expect? The picture Connie is holding up is the Help Position. If you find yourself unexpectedly in the water awaiting rescue, by drawing up your legs and crossing your arms, you help conserve body heat and energy.
