LIFE JACKET LOANER PROGRAM

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Dale Hollow Lake is helping keep kids safe while on the water by participating in the BoatUS Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program for Kids! This program, made possible by the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, allows boaters to borrow a child’s life jacket for the day or the weekend, at no charge!

Here’s how the Life Jacket Loaner Program works. If you don’t have enough properly-fitting children’s life jackets on board, simply visit the registration centers at Dale Hollow Dam, Lillydale, Obey River or Willow Grove campgrounds or Pleasant Grove Day Use Area on Dale Hollow Lake and sign for a loaner infant, child, or youth jacket for the day or the weekend. When finished boating for the day, return the jackets to the same location. Dale Hollow Lake has been awarded five kits of 12 life jackets each, allowing hundreds of children to stay safer on the water.

You may contact Dale Hollow Dam Campground at (931) 243-3554; Lillydale Campground at (931) 823-4155; Obey River Campground at (931) 864-6388; Willow Grove Campground (931) 823-4285; or Pleasant Grove Day Use Area at (931) 243-3555 for office hours and times that life jackets may be borrowed. You can also contact the Office of the Resource Manager at (931) 243-3136 to learn more about Dale Hollow Lake’s participation in the program.

Didymo

The aquatic nuisance plant Didymosphenia geminata, commonly referred to as didymo, is now in the Cumberland River below Wolf Creek Dam and downstream near the TN/KY state line.  There is no feasible control of this nuisance algae and with the current river conditions it is likely to spread throughout the river and increase in density.  It is unknown what the impacts will be to the trout fishery and the aquatic insect community in the Cumberland tailwater. In the short term, the most noticeable effect will be to anglers fishing on or near the bottom, as the cotton-like mats of algae will foul baits and lures.  Please take adequate measure to avoid spreading didymo to other waters by observing the following procedures:

Check: Before leaving a river’s edge, look for clumps of algae and sediment, and remove them from all your gear.  Leave them at the site.  Drain all water from boat, motor and trailer before leaving the area.

Clean: Soak all gear for at least one minute in a 5% (by volume) solution* of household bleach or dishwashing detergent.  All surfaces must be in contact with the cleaning solution for a full minute.  Water absorbent equipment, especially felt-soled wading boots should be soaked thoroughly to ensure complete contact.

Dry: If cleaning is not practical, after the item is dry to the touch, leave it to dry at least another 48 hours before using in another river.

*5% solution: Add 1 cup of household bleach or liquid soap to 1 gallon of water.
