Mitchell takes helm of Nashville Army Engineer District

Lieutenant Colonel Anthony P. Mitchell assumed command of Nashville District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, from Lieutenant Colonel Bernard R. LTC Mitchell previously served as the J42 Construction Branch Chief for Headquarters United States Forces Japan, Yokota Air Base, Japan.

As Nashville District Commander, LTC Mitchell will manage the Corps’ water resources development and navigable waterways operations for the district that sits astride the Cumberland and Tennessee river basin covering 59,000 square miles, and touching seven states and is comprised of a work force of more than 700 employees. The Cumberland basin operates and maintains ten multi-purpose projects for navigation, flood damage reduction, hydropower, environmental stewardship, and recreation.

Nine of these projects generate hydro-electric power. The district has four navigation locks on the cumberland. In the Tennessee river basin we work in partnership with the Tennessee valley authority and operate 15 navigation locks at 10 locations, two operations offices, two regulatory offices and a fleet operations center. Throughout both river basins we carry out regulatory activities, streambank protection, flood control, and operation and maintenance of all navigation facilities and the channel. He also will manage the Corps’ regulatory, environmental restoration, flood risk management (including hurricane and storm damage reduction) and disaster response activities, as well as provide engineering support to our nation’s overseas contingency operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

LTC Mitchell was born in Lafayette, Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and is a graduate of the University of Texas with a Master of Science Degree in Engineering (Construction Engineering and Project Management). His other military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses and the Command and General Staff College.

LTC Mitchell was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers in 1992. He has served in engineer leadership positions from platoon leader through company commander. He was a Platoon Leader and Executive Officer in the 44th Engineer Battalion (M), Camp Howze, Korea, and Company Commander in the 168th Engineer Battalion, Fort Lewis, Washington.

LTC Mitchells’ staff assignments include Assistant Division Plans Officer, Engineer Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; Battalion Logistics Officer, 588th Engineer Battalion (M), Fort Hood, Texas; Assistant Brigade Engineer, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington; Project Engineer, United States Army Corps of Engineers, Far East District, Seoul, Korea; Operations and Executive Officer, 62nd Engineer Combat Battalion (H), Fort Hood, Texas and in Baghdad, Iraq; and Engineer Staff Officer, J4, Headquarters United States Forces Japan, Yokota Air Base, Japan.

His military decorations feature the Bronze Star Medal; Three Meritorious Service Medals; Two Army Commendation Medals; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; The Parachutist Badge, and the Army Engineer Association’s Bronze de Fleury Medal.
