Primitive Camping on Islands

J. Percy Priest Lake

J. Percy Priest offers recreational opportunities of many kinds, and one popular activity for visitors is camping. Most campers opt to use one of several campgrounds, which the Corps provides. Others like to camp at areas, which provide more privacy and allow them to enjoy their camping experience in a more primitive setting. The Corps of Engineers is tasked with providing such an experience for our visitors, so we are proposing to allow camping at select island sites.

A comprehensive inventory of project primitive sites has been performed to determine on which sites to allow camping. Campers who choose to camp on a primitive campsite must do so within established areas developed for this purpose. A white, numbered sign post and fire ring grill will designate primitive sites. Campers must stay within the designated area. Camping outside designated areas will not be permitted. Previously used sites that are not suitable for primitive camping will be posted "no camping". This action is necessary to protect environmental and aesthetic resources which exist and preclude areas where camping may be hazardous to the public. Primitive campers will be required to provide portable sanitation facilities of some fashion, and will be asked to remove all garbage generated during their stay. Firewood used during their stay must be brought in or collected from around the campsite. Cutting of live trees or standing dead timber is not permitted.

Primitive campers should realize that security and law enforcement services are not provided at primitive campsites. Person camping outside developed campgrounds will be doing so at their own risk.

Many of the established sites do not receive regular litter pickup. If you are looking for an interesting activity for your volunteer group, volunteer your services to help us keep the primitive campsites clean. Persons who are interested in volunteering their help can contact the Resource Managers Office at J. Percy Priest Lake at (615) 889-1975.
