Student Employment
The Student Educational Employment Program is comprised of two components: the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) and the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP). The STEP provides maximum flexibility to both students and managers because the nature of the work does not have to be related to the student's academic or career goals.

The SCEP, however, provides work experience which is directly related to the student's academic program and career goals. Students in the SCEP may be noncompetitively converted to regular, continuing civil service employment following completion of their academic and work experience requirements (must work at least 640 hours prior to conversion).

Students for both programs must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking student with at least a half-time academic/vocational/or technical course load in an accredited high school, technical, or vocational school, 2 year or 4 year college or university, graduate or professional school. The definition of half-time is the definition provided by the school in which the student is enrolled.

The Nashville District employs students in a wide variety of specialties with many in the engineering and life science disciplines. Some positions exist in contracting, accounting, clerical/administrative, and computer science. We also have a few positions for students in blue collar occupations such as machinist and maintenance.

Some SCEP employees may receive assistance with tuition costs. SCEP employees also are eligible for health benefits programs, government retirement options (including the opportunity to participate in the Thrift Savings Plan, similar to a 401K and various life insurance options.

All students also receive at least 13 days of both sick (self and family) and annual leave per year (if the student works full time; leave is prorated for less than full time). Also, the Nashville District has various options for flexible work schedules (see below).

Students may work full-time or part-time schedules. There are no limitations on the number of hours a student can work per week. Students can work, with supervisory approval, either concurrently while attending school or on alternating schedules between periods of school.

Students interested in employment with the Nashville District in the District's headquarters at 110 Ninth Ave., or in one of its' field locations (lakes, locks and dams or construction offices throughout Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama) may either send a resume and evidence of school enrollment/acceptance or call for further information.
